Chatham (Illinois) [US], April 29: Four people died and several others were injured after a car crashed into a school summer camp building in Chatham, Illinois on April 28.
Four minors have died after a car crashed into a building hosting an after-school summer camp in Chatham, Illinois, according to ABC News, citing U.S. officials. According to a statement from the Illinois State Police (ISP), the victims ranged in age from 4 to 18 years old.
Many other people were also injured in the incident, which occurred shortly after 3 p.m. on April 28. The severity of the victims has not been determined but some have been taken to hospital and one person had to be transferred by helicopter from the crash scene.
According to the Chatham Police Department, the car crashed into three people outside the YNOT Outdoors Summer Camp campus, killing all three and killing a fourth person inside the building.
"The driver was the only person in the vehicle, was not injured and was taken to a hospital in the area for a medical check," according to the ISP statement.
Police said the driver is being considered as a suspect, though no charges or arrest warrants have been released. The identity of this person has not yet been disclosed.
Officials described the situation at the scene as chaotic and called on families to come to the meeting place to speed up the process of identifying the victims.
The ISP is coordinating with the Chatham Police Department to investigate the incident.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced that authorities are closely monitoring the incident and calling on the community to pray for each other. "A terrible disaster has happened here, affecting all of us," Pritzker said.
